The 1940s continued the tradition that was built in the 1930s. Tommy Bender began the decade coaching two teams to a combined 15-4 record, losing only one SEOAL game and winning a title. The Chieftains came within one touchdown of back to back SEOAL title in 1940-41. Clarence Mackey oversaw the worst season of the decade, the 1942 squad. Hurt by draftees and inexperience, but rebounded in 1943. Tom Armstrong oversaw three strong campaigns, and Dwight Diller ended the dacade with 3 injury plagued seasons. The Chieftains saw many a great player pass through the halls of LHS. Donning the purple and white were All-Ohio performers Bill "Mutt" Bryan, Bill Johnston, Jim Hummel, Bud Magle (twice), Bob Schmitter, Dave Bell, George Lohr, Dale Mowery, Bill Saxton, Pete Kuhn, and John Yates. The highlights came in 1945 and 1943 when the Chieftains earned victories over Lancaster by scores of 20-7 and 6-0 respectively. One of the greatest games came in 1941 when Jim McGonagle kicked a field goal as time expired to beat Pomeroy 16-13.
Team Of the Decade:
The 1941 Logan Chieftains started the season 8-0 until losing their final game to Lancaster. However, the Chieftains won their first outright SEOAL title in 1941 finishing a perfect 7-0 in league play. The Chieftains got one of their most memorably wins against Pomeroy. Jimmy McGonagle kicked a 17-yard FG as time expired to lift Logan over the Purple Panthers 16-13. The season also included a win over Jackson (7-0), their first in 3 seasons. Logan was led on the field by Bill Johnston, Morris and Jimmy Hummel, Paul Stivison, Tracy Conrad, and Louis Casto on offense. On defense they were led by Conrad, Johnston, Morris, Jack Graham, Roy Kelch, and Jimmy McGonagle. Coach Tommy Bender had won his first league championship, but unfortunately it was his last season as the Navy would call following the season.
