In the 1960s LHS reached it's pinnacle under arguably it's greatest head man, Mr. Mel Adams. Adams was the only head Coach to record back to back Undefeated SEOAL seasons until Clarence Perry equalled that in 1987-88. He only had to win 10 straight league contests compared to Adams 14. The 14, actually 16 straight SEOAL wins would not be equalled untill 1999-2000-2001 in which Logan finished an astounding 7-0 in league play three consecutive years. The Adamsmen were above .500 5 of the 6 years in the 1960s. The one year they weren't? The were exactly .500 in 1960. The sixties saw LHS greats like like Chuck Lowe, Chuck Kemper, Greg Poston, Larry Bainter, Ron Rutter, Jim Towbridge, Bill Westfall, John Gasser, George Hummel, Dale Brenning, Robbie Johnson, Merl and Earl Beery, and many more. Adams team in 1964 is another one of the All-Time best, finishing a perfect 10-0 (7-0) and acheiving a ranking of 11th in the Final State Poll. At that time the poll decided the state champion. Following Adams was one his own assistants, Mr. Richard "Dick" Mikes. Mikes went 6-3 and 8-2, but stepped down before the 68 season. Lou Parker took over for one season, and finished 7-3. Mikes took back over in 1969, finishing the decade as head man, but failing to go over .500. The Chieftains finished 4-4-1 in the final season of the decade.
Team Of the Decade:
The 1964 Logan Chieftains finished a perfect 10-0, and 7-0 in the SEOAL for the second consecutive year. Legendary Coach Mel Adams had his finest of his 9 seasons in '64. The team had lost SEOAL MVP Robbie Johnson due to graduation, but that couldn't slow the Chiefs down. Led by a powerful offensive line consisting of Earl and Merl Beery, Guy Champ, Jack Fox, Gary Derr, and Rick Glenn. The Chieftains backfield was no slouch either, featuring All-SEOAL backs George Hummel, Dale Brenning, and Quarterback John Gasser. Receiver Steve Mowery was an all-seoal selection as well. On defense Gasser and Beery's were standouts, along with Denny Baker and Gary Derr. The squad was victorious VS Bexley for the first time in the decade. The defense recorded a record 6 shut-outs, and allowed more than one TD just once. The team was truly dominant during the height of the SEOAL.
