The 1980s ended as one of the most successful decades in LHS football history. The most prolific passer and rusher had set new marks, and in 1987 the Chieftains were a playoff team for the first time. So when new head coach Dale Amyx took over in 1990, the pressure was on. Coach Amyx would stand up well to the early pressure, after finishing a dissapointing 2-8 in his first season, the Chiefs reeled off four straight six win seasons and 3 SEOAL titles in 4 years. The 1994 squad was one of the most talented in Logan history. John Cosgrove set the rushing records for yards in a season, points in a season, and points in a game. Chad Zimmerman had the most efficiant season ever achieved by a Logan QB, and was one of the better Dbs the school had seen as well. Following the success of the '94 team, the Chiefs fell into mediocrity, going under .500 for 3 consecutive seasons. With the pressure mounting, Logan would storm back in 1998. They just missed the playoffs that year and earned a share of the SEOAL title behind Junior TB Wayne Bateman and Sophomore QB Joe Conrad. The next year would be a great season, as the Chiefs reeled off nine straight wins to close the regular season at 9-1. The '99 squad became just the second Logan team to reach the playoffs, where they fell to Pickerington 39-23. Senior Wayne Bateman broke the 5-year old rushing record for yards in a seaoson.
Team Of the Decade:
The 1999 Logan Chieftains captured a second consecutive SEOAL title and became the first team in LHS history to defeat Zanesville. The Chieftains dominated in all seven SEOAL contests. Their lone regular season setback came in the first game of the season at New Lexington. Junior Johnny Conrad was the leader on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker, while brother Joey was becoming one of Logan's finest QBs. Senior Wayne Bateman set the season rushing record, and prove to be a bruising back who showed a lot of speed when he needed too. The team marched to the playoffs, just the second Logan team to do so, where they ended the season with a 39-23 loss to eventual Regional Champion Pickerington.
