Logan Edges Gallia 7-0, Earns Share of SEOAL Crown
Friday Night was billed as a heavy weight title fight. Friday Night was a heavy weight title fight. Some Blue Devils fans had talked trash all week. "Logan Can't Win Without the Conrads" was the quote in the minds of the Logan players all night, and in the end, No Conrads meant No Problem.
The game looked bad for the Chiefs on Gallia's first drive. The Blue Devils drove down the field and were poised to score. Until Bobby Jones coughed up the football and it was recovered by the Chieftains. It was then Logan's turn. The Chiefs drove down the field and were poised to score. Penrod found Jeremy Coakley in the back corner of the end-zone, and Coakley made the catch. However the officials signaled Coakley out of bounds, he was pushed out by the defensive back, and Logan was forced to attempt a field goal. The snap was high, and Puhl had to stutter, then the kick bounce off the left upright, no good.
The kick ended the first quarter. In the second, the Chieftain defense dug-in, and shut down the Gallia offense. Logan moved the ball and picked up first downs, but couldn't find the end-zone. Logan finally found pay dirt with 2:01 to go in the first half. Alex Penrod connected with Jason Dicken from 18-yards out. Penrod lofted the ball, and 6-6 Jason Dicken hauled it in.
Also in the first half, Logan had two other scoring opportunities. Derek Harden ripped off a 55-yard score, but it was called back on a mysterious holding call. Dicken and Penrod connected one more time for 36 yards, but once again the officials signaled the receiver out of bounds.
The Chiefs led 7-0 at the half.
The third quarter was a punting match. Both teams punted. And punted. And punted. Neither team could really get anything going, thanks to two stellar defenses.
In the fourth, the excitement came to a feverous pitch. Gallia had the ball with 7 minutes to go in the game, still trailing 7-0. Brodeur and the Devils started driving. After converting several 4th downs, the Devils were inside Logan territory for the first time since Gallia's first offensive series. However the Logan defense recorded three straight negative yardage plays, and on fourth down Max Resler drug down Brodeur for a 6 yard loss.
Logan burnt time, and then punted with 2 seconds to go. Brodeur hurled the ball down field, and the ball fell incomplete.
The Logan students filed onto the field for the victory celebration, Logan had won it's fourth straight SEOAL crown, the first time this had ever been done.
