Logan Overcomes Mistakes, Injuries to Perform well in Scrimmage

Logan and Sheridan played to a 2-2 tie this evening. The first teams ended deadlocked at 1-1, and the second teams added one a piece. Circleville was much improved over their 2001 edition, and Logan probably was not as strong as they were in 2001, at least not tonight. But I'm one who believes scrimmage don't really mean a lot. A lot will change between now and next Friday.

Logan scored on their first series, after struggling to move the ball for a while, David Ellis hooked up with Jason Dicken for a 55-yard TD pass. Jonathan Pippen added the ensuing extra-point, which looked pretty solid. Looks like Pippen is a keeper. Circleville moved the ball between the 40's very well, and on their third possession finally took the ball all the way over the goal on a 3-yard TD dive. Neither first team would score on their remaining drives. The defense pretty much dominated.

Logan's defense was down two men, as Noah Yates (DB) and Steve Call (LB) were on the sidelines. The offense was missing only Yates (HB).

The offensive skills players looked pretty solid, Ellis, Dicken, Rohr, Bailey, and the other receivers will all definetly be able to get the job done. Also, a lot of the younger guys had great games as well, including Sophomor RB/LB Justin Pack and RB/FB Ryan Kemper.

Kasey Yates and Hickory Ogle are going to have a nice little battle for the nose guard spot. Josh Bailey and Josh Sturgell were both very good linebackers, and Justin Pack who filled in for Steve Call was impressive as well. The D-Line looked good, especially the Wadsworth/Dicken side of the D-Line.

The D-Backfield was a little spotty, but did record two pass break-ups and an interception, even though they were down a man. Huntsy and Caron, both seniors, started at the corners while Rohr and Hughes played safety. I couldn't find Patrick Howe all night. The players had no numbers, so some were very hard to spot.

To be honest, the offensive line appeared to be the achilles heal of the team, and will need to improve before New Lex comes to town. The second guard spot is still open, and this unit really needs to gel for Logan to succeed. Tackling was a little suspect, but it was during scrimmages the last two seasons, so hopefully it will continue to be a pre-season only problem.

As always scrimmages don't prove anything. However, I believe based on the play of the skills players that Logan will be a good team this year.
