The Chieftains looked sluggish in their first scrimmage of 2003 against Circleville tonight. Circleville, a playoff qualifier in Division III during 2002, lost to Gallia Academy 30-21 in the playoffs. Circleville returns 8 starters on their defense and two strong backs.
The starters between both teams managed just one touchdown COMBINED, as the two defenses planted themselves firmly in front of the opposing offense. The Cheiftains picked up ten yards on their first two plays, a 4-yard carry by Austin Rohr and a 6 yard pass from Corey Spackey to Tory Kratzenburg. However, the drive stalled after that. Logan's big chance came in the second series of downs. Spackey connected with TE Cole Resler for an 18-yard gain, and later connected with Tory Kratzenburg for a 45-yard TD. However, Kratzenburg was called for offensive pass interference, and the Chiefs were still scoreless.
Circleville's offense found intermitted success, especially when the Chiefs defense played lazily and didn't tackle well. Sophomore Nose Guard Stephen Spears played well in the middle of the D-Line, and ends Nathan Wagner and Tyler Ackison proved to be a strong point as well. Wagner scored a sack, as did Outside Linebacker Josh Sturgell. The lone TD by the first teamers was scored on a long pass play when Sophomore DB Michael Sexton, thrown into the fire after the injury to B.J. Hughes, got confused and allowed a Tiger receiver to get behind him. The play gained 50+ yards and the TD.
Justin Pack had a 60+ yard scamper that saw him get caught from behind and down inside the 5-yard line. Logan failed to convert however, as the Chiefs fumbled the ball away. Logan's second team did add a late score however.
