The Logan Chieftains played a great scrimmage tonight. It was the first time they've looked sharp in a scrimmage in a few seasons. Corey Spackey had a great football game, finishing around 7-12 for about 180 yards and 2 TDs. There were only a couple of bad throws from him the rest of the night.
The offensive line looked to be in good shape for the first scrimmage. Bruce Lehman was back at Center, and Jesse Wilson filled in for Ray Robinson at Guard. Justin Pack and Kevin Call both saw time at tailback. They were both productive, hitting holes and making plays. Justin Coakley played up to par, on one TD run I think he broke 5 tackles and beat every defender to get into the endzone. The receiving corps played solid, getting open down field and making big plays for the Chiefs. BJ Hughes got the opportunity to show off his wheels and Patrick Howe has a TD as well.
On defense the linebacking corps was all over the place. Justin Coakley hits like a MAC truck, and Justin Pack was flying to the football and making nice plays. The Dbackfield dropped about 4 INTs, but batted away several passes and made some nice stops. The Dline showed improvement. Rob Rose could be an All-League performer this season. The ends played better, but struggled a couple times with containment. They made some nice stops however.
The second and third teams played well too. Kyle Swaim gave a much better performace at QB than he did on Saturday. MIchael Coleman played well on both sides of the ball, but especially on offense. BJ Hughes did not look bad when he got to take some snaps on offense.
The first team offense put 3 TDs up on Circleville. The first score came during Logan's first 10-play stretch. Corey Spackey connected with Patrick Howe for a 30-yard TD, and Nick Poindexter added the PAT. The second score also came on a pass play, this time BJ Hughes broke a 15-yard pass into a 75-yard touchdown making some shifty moves. That score came in the second 10-play series, and Junior Alex Hubbard added the PAT. Logan missed another another scoring opportunity in the last 10-play set when Corey Spackey overthrew Cole Resler in the endzone.
During the down and distance segment, Justin Coakley broke 6 tackles and beat 7 defenders on his way to a 31 yard TD run. Exchange student Mario Vargas added the PAT for the Chiefs. The second team added a couple scores, including one run by Sophomore TB Michael Coleman.
The Chieftains travel to Sheridan on Friday.
