LOGAN — Add Mason Mays to the growing list of all-time Chieftain football
record-holders.
Mays actually passed former Logan great (and Logan High School Athletic
Hall of Famer) D.J. Conrad for the all-time record in career touchdown
pass receptions last week when he took a short pass in the left flat from
quarterback and step-brother Patrick Angle and bulled his way into the
end zone.
It was his fourth TD reception of the season, and he had 13 last year.
Lost in the shuffle, though, was a touchdown pass he caught as a sophomore
in 2007, thus giving him 18 for his career… besting Conrad’s mark of 17.
Mays, Angle and Zach McDaniel have set or tied records this fall —
and we’re just three games into the season.
Logan football historian Spencer Waugh catches us up on the records
through week three. There are going to be a lot more before all is said
and done:
• Angle already holds the records for passing yards in a single game
(324 at Pickerington North in 2008) and season (2,496 in 2008); attempts
in a single game (38 vs. Louisville in 2008) and season (286 in 2008);
completions in a single game (27 vs. Pickerington North this season) and
season (177 in 2008); completion percentage in a single game (last week’s
15-of-15 for 100 percent), and touchdown passes in a single game (4, twice)
and a single season (25 in 2008).
On the career list, he’s currently third in yardage with 3,323 (the
record is 4,248 by Joey Conrad, followed by Keith Myers with 3,941); fourth
in attempts with 374 (record: 564 by Joey Conrad); third in completions
with 342 (record: 306 by Joey Conrad, with Myers second with 265), and
second in career touchdown passes with 35 (record: Myers with 41).
• Mays owns the single-season record for receptions (57 last season)
and. as mentioned, the career mark for TD receptions (18) as well as tying
D.J. Conrad for the single-season record for touchdown receptions (13)
last fall. He’s also climbing the list in a pair of career receiving categories:
he’s tied for third with 73 receptions (record: 82 by Eric Cox) and fourth
in yards with 1,132 (record: 1,319 by Cox).
• McDaniel set a single-game record with 14 receptions earlier this
season against Pickerington North.
Let’s go polling: While the Chiefs are ranked No. 4 in this week’s Division
II poll by The Associated Press, they have a loftier ranking on the JJ
Huddle/ONN Division II power poll: They’re ranked number one, ahead of
second-place Louisville and third-place Mentor Lake Catholic.
Passing fancies: According to the website stassen.com, which specializes
in college football and has a link to compute passer ratings, Angle’s performance
last week at Hamilton Township figures out to a near-perfect 329.12 NCAA
passer rating and a perfect 158.33 NFL rating. His season totals (58 completions
in 80 attempts, 725 yards, eight touchdowns and zero interceptions) compute
to 181.62 and 133.59, respectively… keep in mind that Angle can build upon
that record for consecutive pass completions Friday night. His last pass
against Pickerington North was incomplete, so it’s 15 and counting heading
to Gallipolis.
M*A*S*H report: McDaniel had a knee drained earlier this week but is
expected to play Friday. Mays had a solid night at HT after missing the
last three quarters against Pickerington North, and other players are bouncing
back from other minor hurts. It wouldn’t hurt the Chiefs to have another
game like Hamilton Township to get some players off the field early and
have them as healthy as possible for next Friday’s SEOAL showdown at Ironton.
Chieftain notes: Logan scored 42 first-half points last week despite
only having the ball for nine minutes and four seconds, which figures out
to 4.7 points per minute… longtime LHS activities director and former baseball
coach Ron Janey will be inducted into the Gallia Academy Athletic Hall
of Fame this weekend. He and six other GAHS honorees will be recognized
prior to Friday night’s game, with an induction ceremony and dinner slated
Saturday night at the new Gallia Academy High School in Centenary… playing
a neutral-site Division V playoff game in Logan Chieftain Stadium last
fall apparently made a good impression on Columbus Ready. Logan has added
reserve (home, Sept. 28) and freshman (away, Oct. 8) games with the Silver
Knights to the schedule.
