Chieftain notebook
Angle, Mays
on pace to set
several
single-season marks

LOGAN — With four regular-season games still to be played, the Logan Chieftains are on pace to break several single-season passing and receiving records.

Junior quarterback Patrick Angle (89 completions in 141 pass attempts for 1,319 yards, 15 touchdowns and 63.1 completion percentage) could surpass season records of 138 completions and 1,902 yards (both set by Joey Conrad in 2000), 228 attempts (Keith Myers, 1984), 19 touchdowns (Myers, 1985) and 63.3 percent (Chad Zimmerman, 1994).

Angle has thrown at least one touchdown pass in each of the Chieftains’ first six games and fellow junior Mason Mays has caught a six-point aerial from his step-brother in five of them.
Mays (32 receptions, 534 yards and eight touchdowns) could establish new single-season marks in all three receiving categories. Those records are 44 receptions (B.J. Hughes, 2004), 894 yards and 13 touchdowns (both by D.J. Conrad, 1985).

Team single-season records could fall in most of those same categories.

Taking the lead: The Chieftains have led for a whopping 251:03 of 288 total game minutes (87 percent) played this season. They’ve trailed for only five minutes and three seconds (Lancaster kicked a field goal on its first possession of the game in the season opener) and have been tied for 31:54. Last week’s game against Zanesville marked the first time all season the Chieftains didn’t score in the first quarter — or, for that matter, on their first possession of any game other than against Lancaster — so Logan and Zanesville were tied for 12:11 until the Chiefs scored on the second play of the second period.

Closest shave: Logan’s 16-14 victory over Zanesville last week marked the narrowest margin of victory for the Purple & White during their current 25-game Southeastern Ohio Athletic League winning streak. It was only the sixth time in those 25 games that Logan won by a touchdown or less — the narrowest being a 23-20 win at Zanesville in 2005, and the most recent a 7-0 season-ending win at Ironton in 2006.

Tying history: The Chiefs can equal the school’s all-time best SEOAL winning streak (26 games) with a win Friday at Marietta, which would duplicate an LHS record set between 1998 and 2002. The all-time SEOAL record is Ironton’s 34-game streak from 1971 to 1976… Logan drew even in another category last week: the Chiefs squared their all-time head-to-head series record with Zanesville at 9-9. Logan has won the last nine games against the Blue Devils since 1999 after going 0-for-9 from 1923 to 1998.

It also looks like next season’s week-six game will be the rubber game of the all-time series, as it’s likely to be the final time the two squads hook up on the football field in the near future. Starting in 2010, Logan plays three non-conference games (Lancaster, Pickerington North and Hamilton Township) prior to playing a complete seven-game round-robin schedule within the SEOAL.

Regional interests: As noted yesterday, look for a big shake-up in Division II Region 7 next week after such games as Alliance (6-0) at Louisville (6-0), Columbus Beechcroft (6-0) at Columbus Brookhaven (5-1), Columbus DeSales (6-0) at Columbus Watterson (4-2), Columbus Marion-Franklin (6-0) at Columbus Eastmoor (6-0), Lexington (6-0) at Wooster (5-1) and Sheridan (6-0) at Tri-Valley (6-0). Despite being undefeated, Tri-Valley is only ninth in the region primarily because three of the Scotties’ foes — River View, Maysville and Morgan — are currently 0-6. John Glenn (4-2) is the only team Tri-Valley has played with a winning record. The Scotties also have another showdown with a currently-undefeated team, New Lexington (6-0) two weeks from Friday.
