2003 Post-Season Wrap-Up and Awards
It's time for the second annual LoganFootball.com post-season awards. I'll be awarding awards on the first half, and then evaluate the returining players position by postition.
Post-Season Awards -
Most Valuable Player - The 2003 LoganFootball.com MVP award goes to Senior tailback Austin Rohr. Austin rushed his way into the history books, finishing with the second most yards ever in a single season with 1546 yards. Austin also moved into second on the career rushing list, moving just behind Kelly Wolfe with 3114 yards for his career. Austin also moved into 4th on the career touchdown list with 39. But more importantly Austin fueled a second half sprint that put the Chieftains in position for an SEOAL title and a shot at the playoffs.
Offensive Player of the Year - This award also goes to Senior Tailback Austin Rohr. Rohr's 1546 yards accounted for over 50% of the Logan offense.
Defensive Player of the Year - Senior lineback Steve Call edges out the competition in the defensive backfield. Call had an excellant senior campaign, leading a solid group of linebackers.
Most Outstanding Senior - Senior outside linebacker Josh Sturgell had another outstanding season in 2003. Josh was a solid performer and a great leader this season for the purple and white.
Most Outstanding Junior - Flanker/Cornerback Patrick Howe led the team in receptions (20-192, 7 rushes for 48 yards) and was second in INTs (3). P.Howe also led the team in tackles early in the season and was the Defensive MVP at the half-way point.
Most Outstanding Sophomore - Sophomore DT/FB Justin Coakley had a break-out season, being the team's best Defensive linemen as well as a terrific threat in the offensive backfield. (50 carries, 367 yards, 7 TDs; 9 catches, 81 yards, TD)
Where's this kid been? Award - Senior Guard Jesse Herring put together an outstanding summer and followed up with a great season. An amazing leader.
Most Improved Player Award - Junior DT Rob Rose stepped it up big time as the season went on. An almost non-factor at DT early in the season, Rob was a solid starter in week 10.
Biggest and Brightest Future Award - Sophomores Tyson Kratzenburg and Kevin Call have big upsides. Tyson has the ability to be a two-way starter (OL/DL), while Kevin is in line to be the tailback next season. Kevin played Defensive Line and safety thise season.
And now a look at each position:
Offense -
Quarterback - Junior Corey Spackey completed 77 of 147 passes for a 52% completion percentage. He will need to improve on a 2-10 TD to INT ratio. Corey improved greatly as the season progressed, and appears to be ready for a solid senior season. Junior-to-be Andrew McKee suffered a setback with a broken collarbone injury, but played well in the first few JV starts. Sophomore to be Kyle Swaim finished a stellar Freshman season as well.
Tailback - Junior-to-be Kevin Call saw limited time at TB in place of Austin Rohr this season, rushing 13 times for 25 yards. Call was limited due to his spot on the defensive line. Senior-to-be Justin Pack also carried the ball this season, starting in week 5 against Desales. Pack carried the ball 31 times for 159 yards this season. Sophomore-to-be Michael Coleman may get a look at Tailback as well.
Fullback - Junior-to-be Justin Coakley returns after rushing for 7 TDs and 367 yards on 50 carries and catching 9 passes for 82 yards and another score. Outside LBs - Senior-to-be Justin Pack returns. Junior-to-be Adam Stohs is a favorite for the strong side, with Sophomores-to-be Michael Coleman, Corey Roley, and Zak Gompf providing depth.
Corners - Seniors-to-be Patrick Howe and BJ Hughes both return for the third straight season. Junior-to-be Michael Sexton provides depth.

A challenging schedule which features Lancaster, Chillicothe, Pickerington North, Zanesville, and Gahanna-Lincoln awaits, and that's before league play begins. The Chiefs have a lot of talent, but need to work hard to be prepared for a run at a league title and playoff birth.
