2004 Post-Season Wrap-Up and Awards

2004 Post-Season Wrap-Up and Awards

It's time for the third annual LoganFootball.com post-season awards. I'll be awarding awards on the first half, and then evaluate the returining players position by postition.

 Post-Season Awards -

Most Valuable Player - MVP for 2004 goes to the Senior Offensive linemen.  In a year in which individuals statistics didn't stand out, overall team statistics on offense were outstanding.  Jared Walton, Joe Howdyshell, and Ray Robinson, along with Cole Resler through the first five games gave the Logan skills players the opportunity to make things happen.  Early in the year when the front line was outwayed, they still managed to give Corey Spackey time to throw the football and to create holes for Justin Pack, Justin Coakley, and Kevin Call.
Offensive Player of the Year - Can't give this award to one guy.  Seniors Corey Spackey and BJ Hughes combined to be one of the schools top passer-receiver combos ever.  Corey Spackey completed 100 of 184 attempts for 1277 yard and 15 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.  Hughes was on the receiving end of 41 passes for 537 yards and 9 TDs.  Official team stats had BJ in a tie with the school record of 43 receptions, but as of the publishing of this story those stats were not final.
Defensive Player of the Year - Senior defensive tackle anchored a Logan defensive line which held opponents to only 3.97 yards per carry and only 133 yards per game.  Rob was a terror, getting into opposing backfields and breaking up big plays.  His shoes will be tough to fill next season.
Most Outstanding Senior - Linebacker/Tailback Justin Pack had an outstanding senior season.  Justin led the defense in tackles this season, and was a solid tailback on offense.  Pack ran for 528 yards on a team high 116 carries.  Justin finished second on the team in scoring, with 8 TDs on the ground.
Most Outstanding Junior - Justin Coakley and Kevin Call will both have big senior seasons in 2005.  The linebackers were two of the most reliable players on Logan's defense during 2004, and the two were the driving force in SEOAL play as Logan busted open the ground game on their way to a co-championship.  Justin Coakley averaged 6.58 yards per carry and rushed for a team high 586 yards.  Coakley scored 5 TDs.  Kevin Call led the team in yards per carry with 7.37 yards per carry.  He finished second to Coakley in total rushing yards with 575 yards.  Call also scored 5 TDs.  When Kevin Call carried the ball 10+ times in 2004, Logan was 5-0.
Most Outstanding Sophomore - Guard/Punter Jesse Wilson put together a solid sophomore campaign.  Jesse punted all season for LHS, and was pretty consistent.  But more importantly, after Cole Resler went down in week 5, Jesse Wilson stepped in as the starter in the last 5 games and the line didn't miss a beat.  Jesse is the third straight sophomore to end the year as a solid starter on the offensive line.  Hopefully he'll continue to improve like Jared Walton and Bruce Lehman before him.
Where's this kid been? Award - Everyone's noticed Cole Resler the last two years.  But why's he been playing tight end when he's such a good tackle?  Cole was one of the team's best linemen before a foot injury knocked him out of action before the Jackson game.  Cole was one of the Chiefs GUTSIEST players while he was on the field, playing on a gimpy leg and still being one of the teams top players.  It was great to see Cole on the field senior night.
Most Improved Player Award - Joe Howdyshell went from a Junior special teams player to a Senior starting tackle.  Joe did an outstanding job this season at his tackle spot, and helped lead the way for the Logan offense.
Biggest and Brightest Future Award - Sophomore Michael Coleman has the abilities to be the next in a long line of great Logan High School tailbacks.  The Sophomore finished strong in 2004, scoring two TDs on Senior night.  One of those was an 85-yard kick-off return, the first kick-off return since BJ Hughes did it as a sophomore in 2002.  Coleman rushed for 278 yards on 48 carries for over 5 yards per carry.  A lot of those carries came in mop up time behind second and third string offensive lines.  Coleman had 2 rushing touchdowns in addition to the kick-return.

And now a look at each position:

 Offense -
Quarterback - The quarterback position should be open for competition, but Sophomore-to-be Michael Angle probably has to be the leader at this point.  Angle led the Freshmen to a 6-2 record, including an undefeated run through the SEOAL.  There won't be any other QBs on the roster, but Junior-to-be Josh Clifton played under center for the JVs.  There is a possibility that Senior-to-be Andrew McKee or Junior-to-be Kyle Swaim could rejoin the team to compete for the starting job.
Tailback - Senior-to-be Kevin Call will be a likely starter at the tailback spot in 2005.  Call rushed for almost 600 yards as a Junior in 2004 and scored 5 touchdowns.  He had two 70+ yard TD runs.  Junior-to-be Michael Coleman will get his share of carries as well.  Coleman rushed for almost 300 yards in 2004, most of those yards coming in the last 5 games.  Sophomores-to-be Justin Frye and Mark Potter will probably be JV backs primarily, but could see some carries on the Varsity.
Fullback - Senior-to-be Justin Coakley will be a returning starter after leading the team in rushing yards during 2004.  Sophomores-to-be Mark Potter and Nathan Hoch, Junior-to-be Zach Gompf, and Senior-to-be Adam Stohs will all back up Coakley.
Tight-End - Junior-to-be Nick Amyx seems likely to start at Tight End for the Chiefs in 2005.  Junior-to-be Josh Clifton and Sophomores-to-be Jeshiah Eggers and Nathan Hoch will provide depth.
Split-End - Sophomore-to-be Lucas Wright was a stellar receiver at the freshmen level and looks to continue that success in 2005.  Senior-to-be Nick Walter and Junior-to-be Josh Clifton will both be playing on the outside as well.  Senior-to-be Michael Sexton could all see time on the outside.
Flanker - Senior-to-be Nick Walter, Junior-to-be Josh Clifton, and Senior-to-be Michael Sexton will all be seeing time in the flanker spot.  Sexton caught 3 passes for 28 yards in 2004.
Tackles - Senior-to-be Bruce Lehman (2-year starter) will return at tackle, and several players will fight to play opposite him.  Senior-to-be Tyson Kratzenburg is one possibility, provided he makes the grades.  Junior-to-be Jonathan Hutchison is another possibility.
Guards - Senior-to-be John Spohn nearly one the center job in 2004, and will probably play either there or at guard in 2005.  Senior-to-be Eddie Lindsay played well with the JVs in 2004, and one of the Guard spots is probably his to lose.  Juniors-to-be Scott Frazier and Max Delaplane provide depth.  Sophomores-to-be Cameron Sinnott and Grant Waugh may compete at either guard or tackle.
Center - Junior-to-be Jesse Wilson started 2004 as the back up center before moving to guard.  Look for him or John Spohn to be snapping the football in 2005.

 Defense -
D. Ends - End will be one WIDE open position for the Chiefs in 2005.  Nathan Wagner, Jake Wolfe, and Ray Robinson all graduate.  A big question will be whether or not Michael Sexton stays at end or moves to back to cornerback.  Junior-to-be Nick Amyx, Senior-to-be Eddie Lindsay, and Sophomores-to-be Nathan Hoch and Jeshiah Eggers will probably all compete for time at end.
D. Tackles - Senior-to-be Levi Myers will return at one tackle, probably will be joined by Junior-to-be Bryce Bumgardner.  Junior-to-be Cameron Kiger also will probably compete for time at Defensive Tackle.
Nose Guard - Nose Guard is pretty wide open.  Junior-to-be Bryce Bumgardner played there some in 2004, but most likely a Sophomore will play there.  Look for Cory Kissling and Michael Frasure to try and find their way on the field at NG.
Middle LB - Senior-to-be Justin Coakley is likely to return. Sophomore-to-be Mark Blankenship and Junior-to-be Zach Gompf will back up Coakley.  Blankenship had an interception at the end of the Warren game.
Outside LBs - Junior-to-be Kevin Call returns, and probably will be joined by Senior-to-be Adam Stohs.  Stohs was one of Logan's best open field tacklers in '04 and played well backing up Coakley.  Sophomore-to-be Mark Potter played well with the JVs the last few games of '04.
Corners - Lot's of rebuilding in the D-backfield.  Senior-to-be Nick Walter and Junior-to-be Michael Coleman are probably the favorites at cornerback.  Senior-to-be Michael Sexton could return to corner, if not he'll stay at defensive end.
Safety - Junior-to-be Josh Clifton and Sophomore-to-be Lucas Wright will  probably compete and/or share the safety spot.
