Possession numbers reflect dominance
Chieftain notebook

By Craig Dunn
Logan Daily News

LOGAN — If you think the Logan Chieftains have led their opponents virtually all season, well, you’re nearly 80 percent correct.

In their first seven games, the Purple & White have led for 267 minutes and six seconds of 336 game minutes, meaning they’ve been in front a whopping 79.5 percent of the time.

The Chiefs and their foes have been tied for 57:15 of those 336 minutes (17 percent), and all but 12:02 of that total has been with the score 0-0. The only times they’ve been deadlocked after someone scored was for 2:21 in the third quarter at Ironton and 9:41 of the fourth period against Pickerington North.
Logan has trailed just 11:39 (3.5 percent) - all against Ironton. The Tigers took a 7-0 lead in the second period at Tanks Memorial Stadium three weeks ago before the Chiefs drew even in the third quarter.

Injury/illness update: Defensive end/wide receiver Ryan Sigler, who leads the Chiefs in quarterback sacks with eight, missed the Marietta game due to illness but is back at practice and expected to play this week.

The Chiefs still have some bumps and bruises — Logan coach Dale Amyx noted Mason Mays still has a tender ankle and Zach McDaniel still has a bothersome knee — “but a lot of teams are in much worse shape (physically) than we are right now,” he said.

Mistakes can haunt: The Chiefs have committed only eight miscues (five interceptions and three lost fumbles) and are plus-13 in the turnover department. They’ve forced their opponents into six lost fumbles and picked off 15 passes, not to mention having blocked two punts.

Warren, meanwhile, committed six turnovers in its loss at Portsmouth The Warriors led early, driving 73 yards on nine plays for a first-quarter touchdown, but the Trojans scored the game’s last 28 points, including 21-0 in the second half, to break a 7-7 halftime deadlock.

Statistically speaking: Here are some other statistical oddities and highlights from the season and Marietta game stat sheets: • The Chiefs have yet to allow a point in the first quarter. They’ve outscored their opponents 82-0, meaning they’ve had, in essence, a two-touchdown lead going into the second quarter. Ironically, the Chiefs didn’t allow a single point in the second quarter of their first 11 games last season; Louisville scored its only touchdown in the second stanza of the Chiefs’ season finale in the second round of the Division II playoffs.

• Logan has scored 258 points despite running fewer plays (54.6 to 51.7) and having the ball more than four minutes less than their opponents per game. Despite those differentials, the Chiefs have scored 200 more points than their opponents.

• Quarterback Patrick Angle completed more passes in one game against Pickerington North (a school-record 27) than all seven Logan foes have completed (24) the entire season.

• Logan’s opponents have more punts (32) than completed passes (24).

• With 24 receptions, opposing receivers have only caught nine more passes than Logan defenders have picked off (15) this fall.

• Marietta didn’t commit a single penalty last week.

• Junior Tyler Dement had four tackles for loss against Marietta. Only Angle (five against Ironton) has had more in a single game this fall.

• Jordan Rutter led the Chiefs with 12 total tackles last week, with Dylan Cavinee and Nathan Chandler both adding 10.

JV game canceled: For a second-straight season, Logan’s junior varsity game with Hamilton Township, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31, has been canceled.

The Logan reserves have played only three games this season — they’re 2-1 — and have played just once since Sept. 5. Games with Columbus Ready and Marietta were canceled in recent weeks as well. They are scheduled to host Warren next Monday and play at Jackson Monday, Oct. 26
