Chieftain defense again faces top rusher in SEOAL this Friday
Scouting report: Warren Warriors

Logan Daily News

VINCENT — A week after holding the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League’s top rusher, Marietta’s Perry Wheeler, to only seven yards on eight carries, the Logan Chieftains travel to Warren to face the SEOAL’s new rushing kingpin.

Fullback Kaleb Wolfe (6-1, 220, senior) has rushed for 746 yards and 10 touchdowns on 126 carries.

And although a potential match-up of unbeaten teams was spoiled by Warren’s 28-7 loss at Portsmouth last week, the Blue and White still hold the potential for a ton of Harbin computer points.
But those points work both ways. Warren, which sits No. 14 in Division II Region 7, could use a win over Logan to keep its playoff hopes alive.

Before losing to Portsmouth, the Warriors had strung together six consecutive wins over arch-rival Belpre (56-0), Morgan (43-0), Parkersburg South (31-28), Marietta (35-19), Point Pleasant (35-13), and Meigs (27-26 in double overtime).

Although Wolfe is the workhorse in Warren’s offensive backfield, the Warriors have excellent balance, highlighted by quarterback Clay Ellenwood’s (6-2, 200, senior) 620 passing yards.

Ellenwood has completed 43 of 90 passes with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions — five of them last week at Portsmouth.

Ellenwood’s leading targets are tight end Grant Venham (6-3, 210, junior) and split end Justin Yocum (5-9, 160, senior). Venham has 15 catches for 227 yards and five touchdowns while Yocum adds eight catches for 165 yards and six touchdowns.

In addition to Wolfe, the Warrior backfield boasts running back Kyle Pritt (5-10, 185, senior) and wing backs Evan Arnold (5-11, 167, senior) and Austin Henthorne (5-10, 190, sophomore).

Pritt is second in rushing for the Washington Countians with 234 yards and four scores on 44 carries followed by Henthorne’s 177 yards and one TD on 34 carries. Arnold adds 95 yards on 33 carries and eight catches for 73 yards.

Up front, Warren averages just under 250 yards per man with seven players all able to see action.

Likely starters are Cody Alfred (6-5, 220, senior) and Kaleb Singer (6-1, 242, senior) at tackle, Jon Arbuckle (6-0, 200, senior) and Brian Hendrix (6-0, 247, sophomore) at guard, and Dustin Timberman (6-0, 250, junior) at center.

Joey Lane (6-1, 260, sophomore) and Nate Greathouse (6-1, 310, junior) will both see action at the tackle spots.

Defensively, Warren is allowing 16 points per game with two shutouts. The Warriors line-up in a 4-4 front with good size on the front line, an athletic linebacking corps, and a defensive backfield with 12 interceptions.

Alfred and Singer are the ends, with Lane and Hendrix playing inside as defensive tackles. Alfred leads Warren with five tackles for loss.

Like on offense, Wolfe leads the Warren defense with 101 tackles and three interceptions. Arbuckle is the other inside linebacker, with Pritt and Justin Hilverding (5-11, 182, junior) on the outside. Hilverding has two interceptions.

The secondary is led by Venham and Eric Mason (5-11, 157, senior) on the corners and Yocum at free safety. Mason and Venham each have three interceptions. Jeremy Fivecoait (6-2, 185, sophomore) is also likely to see time in the secondary against Logan’s 4- and 5-wide receiver sets.

Venham and Yocum are skilled return men while Daniel Scot (5-9, 140, sophomore) is the placekicker. Venham also handles the punting duties.
