Chiefs win wild season opener at Athens

McBride rushes for 328 yards, Little and Smith team for three touchdowns in 61-49 victory

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

THE PLAINS — Yes, the Logan Chieftains and Athens Bulldogs have a very historic football rivalry… but what the two teams did in their first meeting in eight years Friday night was off the charts when it comes to historical numbers.

The two teams combined for huge numbers — 110 points, 1,122 total yards, 53 first downs and 16 different touchdowns in Scott Riggs & Family Stadium, numbers that have never been approached since the two schools first met in 1914 — but, as far as the Chiefs are concerned, a simple number 1 will do just fine, thank you.

The Chiefs are 1-0 after winning a season opener for the first time since 2009 after an absolutely wild 61-49 victory at Athens High School.

A dormant football rivalry awakens Friday night

Logan Chieftains set to open season at Athens against team that was once their fiercest rival

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — It seems somewhat strange that preparations to open a Logan football season don’t include the Lancaster Golden Gales.

An 11-year, opening-game series with the Fairfield Countians ended after Lancaster edged the Chieftains 43-42 in a double-overtime thriller last fall in Logan Chieftain Stadium.

So, instead of hopping on U.S. Route 33 and heading north this Friday night, the Purple & White will simply head their wagons south down 33 for another short trip and a week-one matchup with a team that was once its fiercest rival.

The Chiefs open their 2015 campaign at Athens, where they will take on the Bulldogs at renovated Rutter Field at Scott Riggs and Family Stadium.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. — one of only two 7:30 starts on the Logan schedule this fall. All the others, save for week five at Nelsonville-York, begin at 7.

Athens scouting report: Plenty has changed at Athens as 'Dogs, Chiefs renew rivalry

THE PLAINS — For the first time since 2007, the Logan Chieftains and the Athens Bulldogs will meet on the gridiron.

And while the two teams will meet in The Plains, just like they did in 2007, not much else is the same, including a completely renovated Rutter Field at Scott Riggs and Family Stadium that many Chieftain fans will be seeing for the first time.

In 2007, Logan won its fourth-straight Southeastern Ohio Athletic League championship while the Bulldogs were limping to a last-place finish before moving to the Tri-Valley Conference.

The Purple & White recorded a 12th-straight victory over their rivals by a 62-6 score. While Logan would go on to success the next two seasons, the last five years has seen the program fall from the lofty heights achieved from 1999-2009.

For the Green and Gold, however, the move to the TVC-Ohio has paid dividends.

Ironmen picked to defend SEOAL football crown

A poll of Southeastern Ohio Athletic League media indicates the conference's 91st football championship will likely be decided Oct. 9 when the Jackson Ironmen visit the Logan Chieftains.

A panel of eight sportswriters and Internet personnel — with each conference school represented by at least one voter — picked the Ironmen to successfully defend their 2014 title, the key game being in week seven when Jackson and Logan meet in Logan Chieftain Stadium.

The annual poll was conducted by The Logan Daily News.

The poll was close, however, with Jackson (29 total points) edging Logan (27), followed by Gallia Academy (15) and Warren (9). Points were awarded on a 4-3-2-1 basis for first place through fourth, respectively.

Jackson (five) and Logan (three) garnered all of the first-place votes and both teams received all of the second-place votes as well. Gallipolis was picked for third on all but one of the ballots.

Three different teams — Gallipolis (2012), Logan (2013) and Jackson (2014) — have won the last three championships. Jackson unseated Logan as league champion with a 42-7 win last October in the Apple City en route to a 10-0 regular season.

Logan has won 26 conference championships, Jackson 23, Gallia Academy 17 and Warren one. Jackson has claimed three of the last five after Logan took five straight between 2005 and 2009.

The league is down to four members after Portsmouth departed for the Ohio Valley Conference at the conclusion of the 2014-15 school year, and charter member Gallia Academy also leaves the SEOAL for the OVC when the current 2015-16 school year ends.

While the 91st season will not be the conference's last — SEOAL administrators have determined Jackson, Logan and Warren will remain together until one of those three schools finds another league — it will be the last, at least for the near future, with at least four members.

Four schools is the fewest number of members in conference history. The league was formed in 1925 and is the longest-running non-city athletic conference in Ohio.

Road to title in shrinking SEOAL goes through defending champ Jackson

By SPENCER WAUGH for The Logan Daily News

Down to just four teams, the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League enters what could be its final season.

Gallipolis, one of three remaining founding members, will exit the league following the 2015-2016 school year for membership in the Ohio Valley Conference. Defending champion Jackson expects another run at perfection. Whoever takes home the 2015 championship may lay the claim for good.

Here is a look at the SEOAL, team by team:

Defense should have a little depth, strength in trenches

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — While you’ll likely see many of the same players on defense who play a lot of snaps on offense, the Logan Chieftains appear to have a little more depth on that side of the ball.

“Probably we would have as many (potential players), but at the same time we might have a little more depth at each position,” said Logan coach Billy Burke. “The ideal situation is that everyone on your varsity roster plays — that keeps everybody as fresh as possible — but some guys just aren’t ready to play on Friday night. The more guys we have ready to play on Friday night, the better we’ll be.

“I feel pretty good about the amount of kids we have who are capable of playing on Friday night on either side of the football,” he added. “There’s a reason a guy is a two-way starter: if he can play on offense he can probably play on defense, and vice-versa. We are pretty happy with the capable guys we have.”

Success on offense will begin up front with experienced line

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — Yes, the Logan Chieftains return a terrific quarterback, a standout wide receiver and a running back with breakaway speed and strength.

But in order for Lane Little to have time to throw to Isaiah Smith or for Bryce McBride to have room to run, Logan’s success will have to start on its offensive line.

“We’re very experienced on the offensive line,” said third-year head coach Billy Burke. “We have good size and good intelligence on the offensive line. If that holds true (as the season progresses), it will be a lot easier on everybody else. And we probably have three quality backups” to provide depth.

“We have an offensive line that can do pretty much whatever we ask them to do,” he continued. “If we need them to get down and dirty and get us a yard, I feel we can do that — and at the same time, I feel we can kick back and pass protect and do other things too.”

Veteran Logan football team takes aim at regaining SEOAL title, reaching state D2 playoffs

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — To make a pointed observation about his 2015 Logan Chieftains, head coach Billy Burke called upon the words of a pretty darn good coach who knows a thing or two about football talent.

“I read a quote from Urban Meyer several years ago along the lines of ‘you can get by with winning about half of your games on talent,’ ” Burke says, and “ ‘with a little hard work, you’ll win a couple more games. But when you have great leadership, that’s when you can start talking about championships.’

“That’s where we are,” Burke continued. “I’m happy with our leadership. The expectation is a championship of some sort; whether that’s a league title (or) a good playoff run… you never know.”

Chiefs make big plays in final pre-season tilt

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — Seniors Bryce McBride, Isaiah Smith and Lane Little did exactly what they are expected to do — make big plays — as the Logan Chieftains hooked up with the Sheridan Generals in their final pre-season football outing Friday night.

Although Sheridan eventually won Friday's OHSAA "Jamboree" scrimmage 27-20 in Logan Chieftain Stadium, the aforementioned trio led the Purple & White to 14 quick points as Logan's first-string players outscored Sheridan's.

"We got off to a pretty fast start and I was happy with that," Logan coach Billy Burke said shortly afterward. In last Friday's scrimmage at Circleville, "we started slow but we finished well.

"I kind of have this expectation for us to be as perfect and flawless as we can be all the time, and maybe I'm a little hard on the guys about that expectation," he added, "but at the same time, that's how good I think we can be."
