Short-handed Chiefs still have faint SEOAL title hopes as they travel to Warren for season finale

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — As the 2014 season comes to a close, the road-weary Logan Chieftains take another trip down a road they’ve traveled before, both literally and figuratively.

The Purple & White hope to finish with a break-even record, and secure no worse than a second-place Southeastern Ohio Athletic League finish, when they travel to Washington County Friday night to take on the Warren Warriors in their season finale.

Kickoff at Warren High School is slated for 7 p.m.

Chieftain Notebook: Arnett, Stilwell among players who are stepping up for Chiefs

LOGAN — Senior Brandon Arnett and junior Colton Stilwell enjoyed breakout games against Gallia Academy last week… and getting more contributions from them will be vital Friday night when the short-handed Logan Chieftains visit Warren for their season finale.

Arnett was inserted into the backfield for the first time this season and scored his first offensive touchdown on a 1-yard run. He was also involved in six tackles (three solo) with a tackle for loss while both causing and recovering a Gallipolis fumble.

Of the 10 fumbles Chieftain foes have lost this season, Arnett has recovered five of them.

Warren scouting report: Results under new head coach have been mixed for Warriors

By SPENCER WAUGH for The Logan Daily News

VINCENT — The Warren Warriors are hoping that an offensive explosion last week at Portsmouth is a sign their offense has turned the corner.

The Warriors averaged less than 10 points per game during the first eight weeks of the season, but exploded for 43 in a 54-43 loss to the Trojans.

First-year head coach Anthony Fish has instilled a disciplined, run-oriented offense and improved the Warrior defense by making it a priority.

The results have been mixed: the Warriors are 1-8 overall and 0-3 against SEOAL opponents. The lone Warrior win was a week-two, 19-8 victory over Washington County rival Marietta.

Editor’s note: Logan football historian Spencer Waugh is in the process of writing a complete history of Chieftain football, chronicling each season along with the players, coaches and characters that are a part of the Logan football tradition. The following is an example of what to expect.

Fifty years ago, the Chieftains went undefeated for just the second time in school history, duplicating the feat of the 1934 team 30 years earlier. Here’s a look back at that ‘64 team.

Fifty years ago, Logan capped off just the second perfect season in school history while clinching the school’s seventh Southeastern Ohio Athletic League title.

Logan defeats Gallipolis 28-7 in home finale in game filled with strange and bizarre occurrences

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — Wait a minute. Trick or treat is Sunday, and Halloween isn’t until next Friday.

So how, then, do you explain the strange, bizarre high school football game played Friday night in Logan Chieftain Stadium?

For the most part, the Logan Chieftains weren’t worried about trying to explain it: they were simply more than happy to break a two-game losing streak with a 28-7 Southeastern Ohio Athletic League victory over the visiting Gallia Academy Blue Devils on Senior Night.

Chiefs look to keep their SEOAL title hopes alive and, at same time, put a dent in Gallia Academy’s

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — If the realization that the season is nearly over hasn’t yet sunk in on the Logan Chieftains’ 14 seniors, it will no doubt do so Friday night.

At the conclusion of tomorrow night’s home finale against the Gallia Academy Blue Devils in Logan Chieftain Stadium, the seniors will clasp hands and walk from goal line to goal line for the traditional LHS “Senior Walk” to conclude their home football careers.

At that moment, all that will be left — win or lose — will be the final game of their prep careers the following week at Warren. And the goal is to make these last two games as memorable as possible.

Senior Night activities will be observed prior to Friday’s 7 p.m. kickoff.

(Editor’s Note: Logan football historian Spencer Waugh is currently working on writing a complete history of Chieftain football, chronicling each season along with the players, coaches and characters that are a part of the Logan Football tradition. The following is an example of what to expect in the upcoming book.

Eighty years ago, the newly-named “Chieftains” won their first Southeastern Ohio Athletic League championship. The Chieftains have repeated that feat 25 times since then, including seven undefeated/untied regular seasons. Here is a look back at 1934... that first championship).

John “Red” Longley was named the new head football coach at Logan High School in 1931, following two seasons spent as an assistant.

Gallia Academy scouting report: Third head coach in three years has GAHS in SEOAL title chase

CENTENARY, Ohio — Josh Riffe is the third Blue Devil head football coach in the last three seasons.

Despite having only 34 players (including freshmen) on the roster, the school from the French City is 4-4 overall and, at 2-0 in league play, controls its own destiny in the SEOAL title race.

The Blue Devils were dominated in games against Athens, Point Pleasant (West Virginia), and Belfry (Kentucky) by a combined score of 151-3, but those three teams are a combined 23-1.

Zanesville makes clutch plays at key times to hand Logan its second-consecutive defeat

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — When it comes to winning or losing a football game, sometimes it simply comes down to the common denominator of which team makes the plays when they count.

It was the Zanesville Blue Devils — who had won all of two games entering Friday night — who made those plays Friday night in Logan Chieftain Stadium.

“We didn’t take them for granted — but, at the same time, there’s a couple situations where we gotta make a (basic) play in a game that ends up being a big play for them,” said Logan coach Billy Burke after the Blue Devils handed the Chiefs their second-straight defeat, 24-14.
