Chiefs need to be hungry for a football victory

Purple & White host Nelsonville-York Friday night in first of three-consecutive rivalry games

LOGAN — A television commercial that’s been running in various incarnations for several years urges consumers to bite into a popular candy bar because “you’re not you when you’re hungry.”

Make no mistake about it: the Logan Chieftains should be hungry enough for a victory that a mere chocolate bar packed with peanuts just won’t satisfy.

For a number of reasons, the Chiefs just weren’t themselves last week at Cambridge. After putting together solid efforts in losses to Teays Valley and Meigs the previous two weeks, things fell apart in a 48-14 setback to the undefeated Bobcats.

Chieftain Notebook: Logan to play Tri-Valley, Zanesville starting in 2018

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — A couple years from now, when Logan High School is in its second season of being an independent school (not by choice) when it comes to athletics, the 2018 football schedule is actually shaping up to be quite interesting.

As everyone knows, Logan will be without a conference to compete in once the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League closes its doors around nine months from now.

When you have zero conference games to work with, football, by far, is the toughest sport to schedule. Schools in eight-team conferences, for example, have seven of their 10 games automatically scheduled for them each and every season, and even schools in six-team leagues/divisions only need to fill half of their schedules with non-league games.

Nelsonville-York scouting report: Buckeyes bouncing back well from disastrous 1-9 season

NELSONVILLE — Since Nelsonville-York High School opened almost 50 years ago as the result of consolidation, you might say the football program has been “all in the family.”

Dave Boston, who won a state championship in 1981 and whose name is on the school’s football stadium, led the program until his son-in-law, Kevin Meade, took over in the early 1990s.

Dave Boston Jr. (Davy) followed and was only the school’s third head coach until halfway through last season.

But after a disastrous 1-9 campaign in 2015, new head coach Rusty Richards has the Buckeyes back on track. While Richards has no family tie to the Boston family, he is no stranger to the Nelsonville community or Athens County football fans.

A graduate and star at Trimble High School, he was the co-architect of a Trimble defense that won nine playoff games in four seasons, including a state runner-up finish in 2013. Richards has taught in the N-Y school district for 14 years.
He takes over a team with plenty of talent, and despite their 2-2 record, a TVC Ohio Division title and playoff berth are still very much within reach.

On offense, the Buckeyes’ “three-headed monster” of quarterback Hunter Edwards (6-3, 185, senior), fullback Noah Andrews (5-10, 200, senior), and tailback Alex Mount (6-1, 200, senior) leads the way.

Mount averages an astounding 11 yards per carry, leading the Buckeyes with 610 yards on 54 carries with four touchdowns. Andrews shares the team lead with four rushing touchdowns.

Edwards has gained 268 yards on 40 carries with his feet while completing 20 of 55 passes for 406 yards, including four touchdowns against six interceptions.

Chris Cook (5-10, 150, junior) leads the receiving corps with six catches for 150 yards and a pair of scores. Garrett Maiden (5-10, 160, junior) adds five catches for 111 yards and one touchdown.

Other receiving threats include tight end Aron Davis (6-1, 190, senior), Ronnie Wend (5-11, 150, junior), and Keegan Wilburn (5-9, 160, freshman).

Donovan McCollister (6-3, 230, sophomore) is the center while Caden Chilcote (5-11, 275, senior), Matt Carter (6-0, 210, senior), and Chris Yinger (5-10, 275, junior) move between guard and tackle.

On defense, the linebackers lead the way headlined by Andrews, Mount, Garrett O’Nail (5-11, 175, senior) and Christian Berry (5-10, 185, senior).

Tyler Speelman (5-10, 175, junior) and Davis are the ends while Skylar Canter (6-0, 285, senior) and Matt Carter start inside at tackle. Conner Blake (6-3, 230, senior) adds depth.

In the secondary, Cook and Shakim Williams (5-10, 160, junior) are the corners while Wend and Jonathan Richards (6-1, 150, junior) play safety. Maiden and Wilburn add depth.

Maiden handles the kicking duties for N-Y. He converted a pair of field goals for the orange and brown last week.

Unbeaten Bobcats deal Chiefs fourth-straight loss

Touchdown run off fake punt sparks Cambridge to 48-14 victory over Chieftains

By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

CAMBRIDGE — Just when it appeared the Logan Chieftains were on the verge of finding their way against the Cambridge Bobcats, along came Alex Leeper.

The Chiefs found out that the versatile Bobcat’s surname belies his primary athletic prowess… that of being a sprinter.
Leeper’s 39-yard touchdown run off a fake punt early in the second quarter broke a 7-7 tie and sparked a 21-0 Cambridge outburst as the Bobcats went on to deal the Purple & White their fourth-consecutive loss, 48-14, Friday night at McFarland Stadium not far from downtown Cambridge.

Only a 'W' in the win column will suffice for Chiefs

After coming close last week at Meigs, Logan travels to state-ranked Cambridge seeking elusive first victory

  • By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — Three games deep into their football season, the Logan Chieftains aren’t satisfied with mere moral victories.

For various reasons, they’ve had a couple of those the past two weeks… but while they’ve improved with each and every game, they’ve also reached a point where, in the end, nothing but an actual “W” in the win column will suffice.

The Purple & White (0-3) seek victory numero uno this week against a team that is, unexpectedly, a state-ranked squad.

The first state rankings of the young season came out on Monday, and the Cambridge Bobcats (3-0) found themselves rated No. 13 in Division IV by The Associated Press.

Cambridge scouting report: Stout defense, ball-control offense powering Bobcats

Picture
  • By SPENCER WAUGH for The Logan Daily News

CAMBRIDGE — For the first time since 2011, the Cambridge Bobcats are 3-0 with wins over Indian Creek (26-19), John Glenn (17-13), and Canton South (13-6).

If the Bobcats want to return to the OHSAA playoffs for the first time since 2006, a win over Logan on Friday night is the next step.

The Bobcats have been stout on defense, allowing just over 12 points per game while the offense under first-year starting quarterback Nathan Snodgrass (6-1, 185, senior) has controlled the ball and finished enough drives to outscore their first three opponents.

Snodgrass has completed 28 of 63 passes for 359 yards with four touchdowns and only two interceptions. Snodgrass is a dual-threat quarterback and a true pilot for the blue and white offense.

The Bobcats utilize their speed by pulling linemen and moving the pocket east and west and utilizing read-option running plays.

But the Bobcats aren’t all finesse. They will also line up behind center with a pair of running backs.

Tailback Rusty Hayhurst (6-2, 185, senior) leads the team with 194 yards and two scores on 46 carries. William Lowe (5-10, 170, senior) adds 134 yards and two scores on just 28 carries. In the heavy package, Koby Berger (6-0, 225, junior) and Jordan Yerian (5-10, 185, sophomore) are the fullbacks.

In the spread formations, the Guernsey Countians will utilize receivers Marquis Hamilton (5-8, 165, senior), Logan Tuttle (5-6, 130, sophomore), Alex Valentine (6-0, 160, junior), and Trent Valentine (5-8, 140, sophomore). Trent Valentine leads the way with 16 catches for 205 yards and a touchdown.

Cody Wallace (6-0, 210, junior) and Colton Jones (5-9, 165, senior) are the tight ends.

The tackles are Garth Charlton (6-1, 215, senior) and Thomas Arnold (6-0, 205, junior); the guards are Harrison Ogle (5-11, 250, senior) and Garrett Dostall (6-2, 250, junior), and the center is Tommy Moore (5-6, 235, senior).

On defense, Cambridge is led by an outstanding linebacking corps. Charlton and Berger are the inside duo and both played excellent games against the Chieftains last season.

Hayhurst is an outside linebacker while Hamilton and Trent Valentine rotate at the team’s hybrid outside linebacker-strong safety position.

The Bobcats are aggressive but rarely get caught out of position and do a good job of tackling in the open field.

Lowe and Wallace start on the ends, with Thomas Arnold (6-0, 205, junior) adding depth while Moore and Dostall start inside at tackle. Yerian and Ogle add depth at tackle.

Tuttle and Alex Leeper (5-9, 160, senior) are the cornerbacks while Alex Valentine is the free safety. Scottie Minnis (6-2, 165, senior) will also see time in the secondary.

Leeper will handle placekicking and punting duties for CHS. He has converted three field goals so far this season. Lowe and Tuttle return kicks with Trent Valentine the main punt returner.

Logan rallies from double-digit deficit to draw even late in game before 72-yard TD run gives Marauders thrilling 25-19 victory

ROCKSPRINGS — There’s no question as to just how important Meigs quarterback Cody Bartrum is to his team’s offense.

But as well as he played behind center for the Marauders Friday night, it was his defense and toughness that came up huge on a last-gasp goal-line stand as the visiting Logan Chieftains threatened to tie — and maybe take the lead — in the final 90 seconds at Meigs High School’s Farmer’s Bank Stadium.

After being held out of almost all of the second half on defense following an ankle injury he sustained in the second quarter, Bartrum came in at linebacker on the game’s final series and, with the ball on the Meigs 1-yard line, made a huge third-and-goal tackle, throwing Logan’s Preston Yates for a 4-yard loss.

Slowly but surely, Chiefs gaining much-needed experience

Logan travels to Meigs Friday night in search of season's first points as well as first victory

  • By CRAIG DUNN Sports Editor cdunn@logandaily.com

LOGAN — For a young team with a lot of learning to do, the old adage of taking things one game at a time isn’t just a cliché, it’s a fact of football life.

This Friday’s game at Meigs certainly falls into that category for the Logan Chieftains.

“We’ve taken these previous two games in phases,” revealed Logan coach Billy Burke. “Game one was totally a learning experience and what it feels like (to play a varsity game). Game two was to look at the success that we can have when we execute and play hard.

Meigs scouting report: Look for a triple-dose of Bartrum from Marauders

Picture
By SPENCER WAUGH for The Logan Daily News
ROCK SPRINGS — Bartrum, Bartrum, Bartrum!

If Jan Brady thought it was hard growing up as Marcia’s little sister, imagine if there really were three of them.
That’s the challenge the Meigs Marauders bring to the table against the Logan Chieftains on Friday night.
Head coach Mike Bartrum, a former Marauder quarterback and NFL player who appeared in two Super Bowls, has led a resurgence on the gridiron for Meigs High School. The Marauders are 22-20 overall under Bartrum.

At quarterback, senior Cody Bartrum (6-foot-1, 205 pounds) is the team’s top rusher (19 carries, 124 yards) and passer (31 of 52 for 408 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions).
Bartrum’s size and speed make him elusive in the backfield while the Marauder offense, which spreads receivers from sideline to sideline, opens up the field and forces defenses to make one-on-one tackles in space.
The Meigs offense averages over 350 yards per game, including over 200 yards through the air.
The third Bartrum is wide receiver Zach (6-0, 170, sophomore). He leads the team with 10 catches for 130 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a score in Meigs’ 42-7 week-one victory over Gallipolis.
Containing the Bartrum brothers will be key for any defense the Marauders face this fall, but they aren’t the team’s only weapons.
Other skill players include H-back Zach Helton (5-10, 160, junior), receivers Jared Kennedy (6-3, 175, senior), T.J. Williams (5-10, 165, senior), and Bailey Caruthers (6-0, 140, junior). Lane Cullums (6-0, 190, junior) is the main running back, with Tyler Garretson (5-9, 150, junior) adding depth.
Tyler Shull (5-11, 240, senior) and Claytin Neutzling (6-3, 245, sophomore) play tackle up front; Layne Acree (5-11, 225, senior) and Trae Hood (5-10, 215, senior) are the guards, and Matthew Jackson (5-10, 190, sophomore) is the center. Andrew Douglas (6-3, 210, junior) will also see time at tackle.
On defense, Meigs has been stout to start the season, allowing only 337 total yards and 27 points. The Marauders are aggressive and will look to disrupt opposing offenses with creative blitzing.
As on offense, Cody Bartrum is the ringleader from his inside linebacker post, where he is joined by Matthew Brown (5-6, 140, junior). Zach Bartrum and is also a standout at outside linebacker, where he’s joined by K.J. Tracy (6-1, 160, senior).
Freddie Hill (6-0, 185, senior) and Hood are the ends with Acree and Riley Ogdin (6-0, 230, junior) lining up inside at the tackle positions. Keaton Huffman (5-9, 200, senior) adds depth on the defensive line.
In the secondary, Cole Adams (5-10, 145, sophomore) and Caruthers are the cornerbacks with Mattox and Helton playing the safety posts.
Acree will handle the kicking and punting duties for the maroon and gold.
