Dublin Jerome scouting report: Celtics will give Chieftains wide variety of looks on offense
DUBLIN — For the second straight season, the green and gold will face the Logan Chieftains in the season opener.
But this time, the green and gold belongs to the Dublin Jerome Celtics instead of the Athens Bulldogs, who visit Logan Chieftain Stadium in week six.
This will be the second-ever meeting between the two schools; Logan defeated Jerome 23-7 in a 2008 Division II playoff game in Logan.
Gecewich won three state championships in four years as a coordinator at Marion Local High School in northwest Ohio.
On offense, the green and gold will often line up with a single back and four receivers. Seniors Hunter Schell (5-11, 169) and Joe Dunnan (6-0, 173) will both see snaps at the quarterback position.
Austin Booth (5-5, 165, senior) and Robert Cope (5-10, 181, junior) will share the running back spot. The Celtics will often use the read-option in the running game, especially when the field is spread and the quarterback is in the shotgun. Jerome will go under center with two running backs in short yardage situations.
Matt Nesbit (5-11, 175, senior), Ty Henderson (6-0, 160, senior), Shay Talton (5-9, 145, senior), and Max Darrow (6-0, 164, junior) are top receiving targets.
The Celtics average 224 pounds per man on the line. Jason Gilliland (6-0, 202, senior) is the center while Jackson Harris (6-0, 191, junior) and Sam Neverov (6-4, 290, senior) are the guards. Johnathan Kacherski (6-2, 204, senior), Matthew Preininger (6-3, 228, senior), and Connor Radcliff (6-0, 231, sophomore) all will see time at tackle.
Defensively, Jerome will line up in a flexible 4-3 base defense with athletic linebackers who are comfortable playing in space.
Steven Tejada (6-0, 193, junior) is the middle linebacker flanked by Cade Kacherski (6-2, 174, junior) and Dalton Kagy (5-10, 154, junior). Booth will also see time at outside linebacker.
Johnathan Kacherski and Preininger are the ends with Cam Craig (6-3, 231, sophomore) and Tom Sonnanstine (6-2, 186, senior) playing tackle. Radcliff adds depth.
Darrow and Talton are the cornerbacks with Nick Ernst (5-11, 164, senior) and Nick Kirk (5-11, 153, junior) playing the safety positions.
