Teays Valley scouting report: Offense resembles Logan's old I-formation style
ASHVILLE — Longtime Chieftain football fans might get confused when the Teays Valley offense takes the field Friday night at Logan Chieftain Stadium.
While the Vikings will be the team in the white jerseys, they will look an awful lot like the Purple & White teams that dominated the SEOAL from the late 90s through the mid-2000s… at least in terms of style of play.
Teays Valley will line up in an I-formation pro-style offense, a rarity in today’s high school game. The tight end and fullback are both very involved in the passing game, and the running backs hit the hole hard behind a strong offensive line.
The Blue and Gold returned to the playoffs for the first time since 1999 and won a share of their first Mid-State League Buckeye Division championship since 2005, finishing with an 8-3 record. The Vikings return 13 starters, including eight on defense.
On offense, senior Drew Pennington (6-0, 170) is in his third year as the starting quarterback. Pennington is a dual threat: he's a very good passer and strong runner.
Joining Pennington in the backfield are Nate Cornett (5-10, 190, junior), Colton Carroll (5-11, 185, senior), and Tanner Oller (6-0, 225, senior). Cornett will line up as a tailback while Oller is a fullback. Carroll will line up at both running back posts.
Travis Grim (6-2, 180, junior), Hunter Wellman (5-9, 165, senior), Dylan Pennington (5-9, 165, sophomore), and Isaac Kennedy (6-0, 170, junior) will all rotate at wide receiver. Mason Kauffeld (6-2, 190, senior) is a sure handed tight end.
Trevor Klein (6-0, 240, senior) and Christian Lowery (6-0, 270, senior) will bookend guards Luke Welsh (5-11, 230, junior) and Zack Conkins (5-7, 250, sophomore). Neal Davis (6-2, 280, senior) is a three-year starter at center. Brandon Evans (6-1, 235, senior) adds depth after starting at guard in 2014.
Defensively, the Blue and Gold made a switch from a 4-3 base defense to a 4-4 in an effort to improve against opposing passing attacks.
Evans and Kauffeld will play on the outside with Davis and Oller lining up at defensive tackle. Scott Riley (5-11, 280, junior) and Cesar Raga (6-3, 415, senior) will be a part of the rotation up front.
Carroll and Cornett will pair at inside linebacker, while Cameron Phillips (6-2, 160, junior) and Tyler Harness (5-11, 180, senior) play outside linebacker. Caleb Burgett (6-1, 170, junior) and Kennedy could see time at linebacker as well.
Wellman and Dylan Pennington start at cornerback while Brandon Coleman (6-1, 170, sophomore) is the safety.
Cory Barnett (6-0, 175, senior) does the placekicking and punting for Pickaway Countians. Barnett booted a 35-yard field goal last week’s 38-0 shutout of Westfall. Wellman is the primary punt and kick returner.
